MAŠTANJA – IZMJEŠTANJA

Splitski salon u organizaciji HULU Split jedna je od najvećih periodičnih izložbi koja se održava u Hrvatskoj, također i među onim izložbama koje organiziraju lokalna/regionalna umjetnička udruženja, ali na hrvatskoj kulturnoj sceni njezina javna reputacija kaska za veličinom same manifestacije. Splitski salon krasi još nekoliko specifičnih razlika u odnosu na druge likovne manifestacije u Hrvatskoj, ali niti stručna, a kamo li šira javnost, za njih ne mari.

Bio je to jedan od razloga da smo za temu oko koje smo sagradile koncept izložbe uzele dijalog pojedinca s institucijama društva i kulture i predložile kao radni naslov izložbe Maštanja – Izmještanja, koji se međutim, tako dobro “primio” i zaživio u komunikaciji da je kasnije bilo šteta mijenjati ga.

Nije međutim naodmet pitati: Maštanja – o čemu? Izmještanja – čega, i u odnosu na što? Maštati se može o izmještanju iz stvarnosti, ali i o nekoj drugoj (prošloj ili budućoj) zbilji.
Izmještati se možemo u maštu, ali i unutar zbilje same.

Julia Kristeva u tekstu The Crisis of European Subject piše o tome kako je slobodna subjektivnost u opasnosti jer društvo više ne konstruira narativ o samome sebi. Ona tvrdi da smo, zbog naših ovisnosti o masovnim medijima i politici izgubili kapacitet da elaboriramo svoje unutarnje ja, da definiramo vlastiti senzibilitet i da ne uspijevamo život razumijevati refleksivno.

Kolektivizam koji prevladava društvenim situacijama, društvenim mrežama, banalizirana dihotomija stavova za i protiv i isključuje kompleksnosti situacija i uglavnom već neko vrijeme ne doprinosi dobrome u društvu, već ravnodušnosti u, i spram društva.

U svjetlu takvih promišljanja, središnjim interesom umjetnosti danas, pa tako i ovog Salona pokazala nam se kako komunikacijska vrijednost/uloga umjetnosti u najrazličitijim njenim pojavama unutar društvene stvarnosti, tako i nužnost propitivanja učinkovitosti, mogućnosti, pa i smislenosti komunikacijskog potencijala umjetnosti. Vektori su pri tom izmjeničnih smjerova: od rada na kulturi sjećanja sve do utopija i vizija budućnosti.

Prostor izložbe zamislile smo stoga kao prostor dijaloga, zamišljanja promjena, prijedloga, socijalne kritike, pitanja urbane topografije i “aktiviranja simboličkog poretka” unutar i izvan institucionalnog konteksta.

Iz prispjelih prijedloga (čak oko 150!) na ponuđenu temu izdvojili smo one koji su se koncentrirali na pozicioniranje urbanih tema, kako konkretno splitskih, tako i uopće urbanih; na njihovu prisutnost kroz umjetnost u društvenom tkivu grada. Na 22 lokacije u gradu, pa čak i izvan Splita realizirano je 55 projekata, u najšire zamislivom medijskom spektru: od konvencionalnih crteža, preko slikarstva i skulpture, pa skulpture u njezinim raznim postmodernim interpretacijama, preko instalacija, performancea, fotografija i fotoinstalacija, raznih varijacija audio i video radova, animacije, do onih radova koji nastaju zahvaljujući prikupljanju podataka na Internetu, koji nastaju u javnim prostorima, te su vrlo različitih trajanja, od onih koji su “time based” do onih koji imaju šansu trajati vječno.

Tako različiti pristupi medijima i strategijama umjetničkih produkcija rezultirali su izborom brojnih i raznolikih prostora realizacije projekata: od Dioklecijanovih Podruma, Salona Galić, MKC-a, Muzeja grada Splita, kafića Galerije umjetnina, te drugih, javnih mjesta, kako onih u urbanom tkivu grada, primjerice Rive i nekih ulica, tako i onih medijskih, shvaćenih kao sredstva javnog oglašavanja i tiska, te javnih institucija koje nisu izravno vezane uz pojam kulture i kulturne produkcije, već se vezuju uz šira društvena značenja i javnost.

Pri samom izboru suočile smo se s pozivanjem i nepozivanjem na izložbu nekih od mitskih likova lokalne scene, ali namjera nam i jest bila udaljiti se od svima poznatih (i ne samo!) splitskih izložbenih stereotipova, suočiti publiku s isto- i raznomišljenim temama, pa i sa svojedobnim generacijskim jazom među sudionicima Salona. Bitan za ovaj Salon bio je stoga veliki doprinos studenta UMAS-a, i mladih umjetnika iz Splita, ali i izvan Splita.

Povezivanje profesora i studenata UMAS-a s organizatorom Salona, splitskim HULUom rezultiralo je novom praksom timskog, umreženog radnog procesa čije rezultate možemo vidjeti u zgradi same Akademije, i na nekoliko drugih sveučilišnih institucija, npr. u zgradi Fakulteta arhitekture, na Medicinskom, Pravnom i Ekonomskom fakultetu, na Radionici u MKCu, ali i izvan samog Splita, u Društvenim prostorijama umirovljenika u Supetru na Braču. Upravo u tim timskim projektima čiji su nosioci studenti nazire se i jedan potpuno drugačiji pristup koji jest i kritički i akcijski/aktivistički (što se može smatrati karakternom crtom cjelokupne off-scene) – samo taj ne ostaje na riječitom angažmanu, nego pokazuje što umjetnost može i efektivno ČINITI u datom trenutku. Odlukom da se udruže i uzmu stvari u svoje ruke studenti su odlučili svoja maštanja – ili barem djelić toga! – izmjestiti, ugraditi u svoju buduću stvarnost. Njihovo prisustvo u ovom gradu i njihov govor moramo učiniti što uočljivijim i što glasnijim.

U kulturnom kontekstu, na ovoj izložbi koja ima i tradiciju, dobru i lošu povijest iza sebe, u gradu koji se smatra istodobno i nenadmašnim i manje vrijednim, u gradu koji vrvi kulturom, koji se komotno oslanja na nasljeđe, a ironično gleda u vlastito stvaralaštvo, u kojem je sva populacija sklona hedonizmu, ali u čijoj atmosferi prevladava shizofreno stanje koje kulminira u dane zimskoga juga prekomjernom konzumacijom trankvilizatora svih provenijencija, mislile smo da bi maštanja mogla svima biti od koristi, a izmještanja obrana od eskapizma.

Radovi koji su stigli kao prijedlozi za izlaganje na Salonu, neki već izlagani, a neki nastali potaknuti ovom izložbom, mogu se grupirati u nekoliko prevladavajućih tema i cjelina. Ovdje navodimo primjer kako su se asocijativno korišteni pojmovi povezivali s radovima pojedinih autora i kako su se pokazali međusobno značenjski premreženi i kontekstualno uslojeni:

Navedene teme i njihove podteme uključuju i posebni, u gotovo svim radovima
prisutan komentar i osvrt na položaj umjetnika u društvu, ali i njegov položaj unutar sve izoliranijeg svijeta kulture i kulturne institucionalizarnosti.

Za 38. Splitski salon, koji je postao tradicionalna smotra umjetničkog stvaralaštva, bitno je stoga bilo promišljanje Splita danas koji i jest, ali i nije sasvim onaj isti kao jučer i to u okvirima one djelatnosti koja je u sklopu otežanih životnih uvjeta u cijeloj Hrvatskoj uglavnom ostala bez danas sveprisutnih paradigmi za njezino postojanje. Riječ je o suvremenoj umjetnosti koja i dalje (tradicionalno!) u Hrvatskoj nema razvijeno tržište i parametre bavljenja sobom na razinama svoje distribucije. Ipak, i u toj manjkavoj mreži institucija, sredstava i motivacija, u društvu koje joj posvećuje malu ili nikakvu pažnju – umjetnost se bavi tim društvom, bavi se genuinom situacijom što nerijetko rezultira ne toliko lokalnim koliko iznenađujuće lucidnim, specifičnim umjetničkim izričajima. A ti su sukladno različitostima uvjeta svojeg nastanka različiti u Osijeku, Zagrebu, Rijeci jednako kao oni u Parizu, Rijadu, Tokiju ili drugdje. Iako ne postoji tendencija nekoj nativno determiniranoj sceni, pa ni zatvaranju u mjesne ograničenosti – globalna umreženost i heterogeni status umjetnosti u stalnom kretanju misli se diferencirano i mjesno situirano. U Splitu je takva situiranost umjetnosti obilježena s jedne strane vrlo živom scenom, koja uključuje i djelovanje Akademije, a s druge strane markantna je, i spram te suvremene scene neadekvatna oskudnost izlagačkim prostorima.

Mislimo da su radovi na izložbi rječiti, zabavni, ponekad iz očaja duhoviti, ponekad moćni u svojem govoru o nemoći. Naš izbor koncentrirao se na one koje smo smatrali da odgovaraju temi i da međusobno korespondiraju, da su u dijalogu, i da smo izložbi omogućili suglasje i višeglasje među autorima, a umjetnicima možda trenutak u kojem ne govore samo Splitu, već da drugima govore o Splitu.

Kada bi se moglo, bilo bi lijepo da se na izložbi služimo s više jezika, da je se izmjesti s lokalnog i regionalnog na međunarodni dijalog. Odnedavno, otkako je 1. srpnja 2013. roaming pojeftinio, to bi možda moglo i biti moguće. Ili su to samo naša maštanja?

Svim manjkavostima uprkos domaća likovna scena dokazuje čak i u tim uvjetima zavidnu produkcijsku razinu i kvalitetu globalne uključenosti u buzz svjetskih umjetničkih kretanja posežući upravo za sredstvima i govorom sredine u kojoj nastaje.

FANTASIZING – DISLOCATING

The Split Salon, organized by the Croatian Association of Artists in Split, is one of the largest periodic exhibitions among the exhibitions organized by local/regional art associations in Croatia; however, on the Croatian culture scene its public reputation lags behind the importance of the event. The Split Salon is distinguished by several specific qualities in relation to other art events in Croatia, but neither professional nor general public care about that. That was one of the reasons we decided to take the dialogue between the individual and social and cultural institutions as a topic around which we developed the concept of the exhibition and as a working title we suggested: Fantasizing – Dislocation. However, this title was so well received and generally accepted in communication that it was a shame to change it afterwards.

It does not, however, hurt to ask: Daydreams – about what? Dislocations – of what, and in relation to what? One can daydream about dislocation from reality, but also about some other (past or future) reality. We can dislocate ourselves into the imagination, but also within the reality itself.

In her text The Crisis of the European Subject Julia Kristeva writes about how free subjectivity is under threat because the society is no longer constructing a narrative about itself. She claims that, because of our dependence on the mass media and politics, we have lost the capacity to elaborate our inner self, to define our own sensibility and we fail to understand life reflexively. Collectivism, which dominates social situations and social networks, a banal dichotomy of attitudes for and against, excludes the complexity of a situation and mainly for a while it has not contributed to a good society, but to indifference within and towards the society.

In the light of these considerations, the primary interest of art today, and therefore of this Salon, turned out to be the communicative value/role of art in its various manifestations within the social reality as well as the necessity of questioning the effectiveness, possibilities, and even meaningfulness of the communicative potential of art. In this process, vectors are of alternating directions: from dealing with the culture of memory to the utopias and visions of the future.

Hence, we conceived the exhibition as a space of dialogue, for imagining changes, making suggestions, social criticism, raising issues of urban topography and “activating the symbolic order” within and outside the institutional context.

From the submitted proposals (as many as 150!) on the given topic, we selected the ones that focused on the positioning of urban issues, both Split’s and general ones, and the way they are, through art, present in the social fabric of the city. In 22 locations around the city, and even outside Split, 55 projects were realized in the broadest imaginable scope of art media: from conventional drawing, through painting and sculpture, then sculpture in its various postmodern interpretations, through installations, performances, photography and photo installations, various audio and/or visual works, animations, to the works created due to collecting data from the Internet, created in public spaces, which can be of various duration, from the time-based ones to the ones that have a chance to last forever.

Such different approaches to strategies and media of artistic production have resulted in the selection of many and varied spaces for the realization of the project: from Diocletian’s cellars, Galić Salon, Multimedia Cultural Centre Split, Split City Museum, Art Gallery Cafe, and other, public spaces, the ones in the urban tissue of the city, such as the Riva waterfront and some city streets, as well as the media spaces, which were seen as a medium of public advertising and the press, and public institutions that are not directly related to the concept of culture and cultural production, but are related to a broader social significance and general public.

During the selection process we were faced with the decision whether to invite some of the mythical figures from the local scene or not; indeed our intention was to move away from the well-known (and not only those!) Split exhibition stereotypes, to confront the audience with the like- and unlike-minded themes, as well as with the generation gap between the Salon participants. For that reason, the contribution of the students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Split and young artists from Split and beyond was of great importance for this Salon.

The collaboration between the professors and students from the Academy of Fine Arts and the Salon organizer, the Croatian Association of Artists – Split, has resulted in a new practice of team interactive working process, the results of which can be seen in the Academy building and several other university institutions, such as the building of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, the School of Medicine, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economics, the workshop in the Multimedia Cultural Centre, but also in places other than Split, such as the Community Space for Retired People in Supetar, Brač.

Precisely these team projects managed by students give a glimpse of an entirely different approach, both of a critical and action/activist nature (a characteristic of the entire off-scene) – however, this one does not stop with the eloquent engagement, but also shows what art can effectively DO in a given moment. By deciding to join forces and take matters into their own hands, the students decided to dislocate their fantasies – or at least some of them! – and incorporate them into their future reality. Their presence and voice in the city have to be as visible and as loud as possible.

In the cultural context, at this exhibition with a tradition, good and bad history behind it, in the city that is seen both as matchless and less worthy, the city full of culture, which comfortably relies on its heritage, and yet ironically looks upon its own creativity, in which the entire population is prone to hedonism, but with a schizophrenic atmosphere that, in the days of south wind in winter, culminates in overconsumption of tranquilizers of choice, we thought that everybody could use a bit of fantasizing, whereas dislocation could be used as defence against escapism.

The works submitted to be exhibited at the Salon, some of which have already been exhibited, while the others were created inspired by this exhibition, could be grouped into several dominant themes and units. Here we give an example of how the associatively used terms were linked to the works of individual authors and turned out to be intertwined in meaning and contextually layered:

The given topics and their subtopics also include a special comment and review of the position of the artist in society, present in almost all the works, but also his/her position in the increasingly isolated world of culture and cultural institutionalization.

What is important for the 38th Split Salon, which has become a traditional festival of artistic creation, is a reflection on the Split of today, which is not quite the same as the Split of yesterday, and within the framework of the activity that, in these difficult living conditions in Croatia, mainly remained without nowadays omnipresent paradigms for its existence. The subject under discussion is contemporary art that, in Croatia, still (traditionally!) does not have a developed market and parameters of dealing with itself on the levels of its distribution. Still, even within that invalid network of institutions, means and motivations, in the society that pays little or no attention to it – art still deals with that same society, it deals with the genuine situation which often results not so much in local, but in a surprisingly lucid, specific artistic expression. And in accordance with the conditions of their origination, these artistic expressions differ in Osijek, Zagreb, Rijeka, as well as in Paris, Riyadh, Tokyo or elsewhere. Although there is no tendency towards a natively determined scene or parochialism – global networking and heterogeneous status of art in constant motion are still seen as differentiated and locally situated. In Split, such situatedness of art is on the one hand characterized by a very lively scene, which also includes the activities of the Academy, and on the other hand there is a striking, and in relation to that contemporary scene, inadequate scarcity of exhibition spaces.

We think the exhibited works are eloquent, fun, sometimes funny out of desperation, sometimes powerful in their dealing with helplessness. The selection is focused on the works we thought fit the topic and correspond to each other, in a dialogue, we also wanted to achieve harmony and polyphony among authors, and enable artists to talk not only to Split, but also to the others about Split.

If it would be possible, it would be nice to use multiple languages at the exhibition, to dislocate from the local and regional and enter into an international dialogue. Lately, since roaming became cheaper on July 1, 2013, that could even be possible. Or is it just a fantasy?

In spite of all its shortcomings, and even in these conditions, the local art scene demonstrates an enviable level of production and quality of global involvement in the buzz of world art movements, reaching precisely for the resources and voice of the environment in which it is created.

The artists sometimes speak about their own position, and sometimes about the position of all artists in culture, with obvious dissatisfaction, and even to the extent that

. Perhaps contradictory, but an accurate diagnosis, it is even more important to notice the continuous vitality of the scene despite the circumstances, and emphasize the conclusion

“…that all of us still believe in art.”
