Janka Vukmir
Janka Vukmir is an art historian, art critic, and curator from Zagreb. She is a co-founder and president of the Institute for Contemporary Art. Previously, she was the director and assistant director of SCCA – Zagreb, Soros Center for Contemporary Art. Before engaging with art organizations, she worked independently as a contemporary art curator and art critic in numerous print and electronic media. Most of her work is dedicated to independent art initiatives, organizations, and artists, so she has been involved or engaged in various capacities with many organizations, such as the founder and coordinator of Zagreb Gallery Weekend, a co-founder and organizer of the Radoslav Putar Award, a co-founder and president of Croatian Independent Publishers, executive director of ZGRAF 10, a member of the Executive Board of AICA Croatia, a board member of the Extended Media Gallery…
Her texts have been published in numerous solo and group exhibition catalogs, such as the Venice Biennale, Croatian Presentation (Martina Kramer); Documenta 10, Exhibition Guide (Slaven Tolj); Documenta 11 Guide, Exhibition Guide (Andreja Kulunčić); Radikale Bilder, 2nd Photo Triennial, Neue Galerie, Graz, Austria; After the Wall, (Slaven Tolj), Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Art is Not Allowed Here, Regensburg, Germany; Croatian Contemporary Art; Lalit Kala Akademi, National Academy of Arts New Delhi; Tomislav Gotovac, Crisis Anticipator, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka, Croatia. She has collaborated with various publications and books in the field of contemporary art and art management.
The author of the book Perceptual Art – Slaven Tolj, SCCA Zagreb, and editor of many other publications, such as Group of Six, CD publication Anto Jerković (1958 – 2005), Documentation (with Jelena Perić); Checkpoint, SCCA Zagreb; From Diaspora to Diversity, (editor and author), non-governmental organization Esperanza World Cultural Center, (Robert Alagjozovski, Janka Vukmir, Miroslav Karić, Mirjana Peitler, Darka Radosavljević-Vasiljević). She was co-founder and editor-in-chief of the magazine Radionica.
Co-publisher with the Institute of Art History, Zagreb, of two volumes of books by Radoslav Putar: Critiques, Studies, Notes 1967–1987; 2016/17, Zagreb.
She recently edited (with Igor Kuduz) the extensive collection of texts Marin Viculin: Vrijeme bez namjere (2019.).
Her curatorial work has been presented in Croatian and international galleries.
